Accessibility

Bryl is a tool for licensed mental-health professionals to capture, transcribe, and draft session notes on their iPhone or iPad. Roushan, Inc. (the publisher of Bryl) is committed to making the app usable for clinicians who rely on iOS's accessibility features. This statement documents the current state, the standards we target, and how to reach us if something blocks you.

Standards we target

We target conformance with WCAG 2.2 Level AA for any non-decorative content surface, and follow Apple's Human Interface Guidelines: Accessibility for in-app behavior. Bryl is built on SwiftUI, which inherits a large portion of the iOS accessibility stack by default; we also test the screens we ship for VoiceOver labels, Dynamic Type scaling, color contrast, and reduced motion.

Supported iOS accessibility features

• VoiceOver. All interactive controls (record button, marker pads, transcribe / generate / sign-and-lock buttons, paywall tier toggle, navigation links) ship with screen-reader labels. Decorative imagery (the brand wordmark, abstract onboarding illustrations) is marked decorative so VoiceOver does not announce it. Dialogue blocks in transcripts use heading roles for speaker turns.
• Dynamic Type. Body copy and UI labels scale with the user's preferred text size, including the larger Accessibility text sizes. Headings, mono-strap captions, and the clinical-note body all participate. The recording timer and ambient quote use larger fixed sizes (because they're the focal point of that screen) but remain legible at every Dynamic Type setting.
• Bold Text. Bryl honors the system Bold Text setting; SF Pro family weights pick up the heavier variants automatically.
• Reduce Motion. When Reduce Motion is enabled, the recording-state pulse, splash crossfade, paywall tier-toggle slide, and navigation transitions degrade to instant cross-fades or omit motion entirely.
• Reduce Transparency / Increase Contrast. Bryl's default surface is the warm Linen palette (light mode only by design). With Increase Contrast enabled, Stone secondary text shifts to Ink, hairline rules thicken, and the pill-button border strengthens.
• Differentiate Without Color. Status badges (Captured, Drafted, Signed, Sealed, Review goals, Reach out) carry a textual label in addition to the colored dot. Marker chips include their kind (RISK, VERBATIM, THEME, MARK) as text.
• Voice Control. Buttons and links use system-standard accessibility roles, so “Tap Start session,” “Tap End and draft note,” “Tap Sign and lock,” and so on are recognized by Voice Control.
• Switch Control. The same role-driven structure makes Bryl navigable by Switch Control. The recording, detail, and paywall screens are linear focus orders without focus traps.
• Captions and transcription. Bryl is itself a transcription tool — every session you record produces a verbatim, speaker-labeled transcript on-device, which is the App's primary captioning surface.
• Hearing devices and AirPods. Audio capture uses standard AVAudioRecorder behavior, so any iOS-supported microphone (built-in, AirPods, Made-for-iPhone hearing devices) records normally.
• Larger touch targets. All primary actions meet or exceed Apple's 44×44pt recommended hit target.

Color and contrast

Bryl's palette is documented in the brand system; the body Ink-on-Linen pair (#1E1A14 on #F8F1E5) measures roughly 11.4:1, well above the 4.5:1 AA threshold for body text. Stone secondary text (#7A6F5C on Linen) measures roughly 4.7:1 and is reserved for non-essential meta lines. Accent Clay (#B87E63) is used for captions and italic emphasis; we do not rely on Clay alone to communicate state.

Known limitations

Bryl is in its first public release. We are aware of the following items and are tracking them:

• The mood / GAD-7 trend chart on the client profile renders points as small markers; we read them aloud as a sequence of values (“Session 1: 3.2; Session 2: 3.6…”) rather than rendering a true line-graph alternative. Improvement planned.
• The transcript pane on long sessions can become a single very-long focus region under VoiceOver. We expose per-turn rotor navigation but recognize that for >30-minute sessions a paragraph-level summary view would be more comfortable. On the roadmap.
• Bryl ships in light mode only — the Linen brand canvas is the entire visual surface. We have not designed a dark surface and do not auto-invert; users who prefer dark surfaces can use iOS's Smart Invert system feature, which leaves images alone.

Hardware and platform requirements

Bryl supports iOS 17 and later on iPhone 13 and newer, and iPadOS 17 and later. The app uses on-device speech recognition and on-device language models; some accessibility-adjacent features (e.g., Apple's system-level Live Captions, Voice Control vocabulary) are governed by your iOS version, not by Bryl directly.

Compatibility with assistive technology

Bryl is tested with VoiceOver and Voice Control on iPhone 17 / iPad Pro 13″ M5 simulators and physical-device runs. We have not yet completed a full audit by an external accessibility consultant; we plan to run one within the first six months after launch and update this page when that report lands.

If something in Bryl is unusable for you, please tell us. Email accessibility@bryl.app with a description of what you were trying to do, what feature you were using (VoiceOver, Voice Control, Switch Control, etc.), and which iOS version and device you were on. We will reply within one business day, and we treat accessibility regressions as ship-stopping.

Formal complaints

US users have rights under Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (for federal-government contexts) and the Americans with Disabilities Act. EU users have rights under the European Accessibility Act (2025). UK users have rights under the Equality Act 2010. If we cannot resolve your concern directly, you may also raise it with the relevant regulator in your jurisdiction.
